Indian American actor Vibhor Mathur, born to Indian parents from Jaipur and Nagpur, was among the performers featured at this year’s Tribeca Festival, which concluded on June 15 in New York City. His small but notable role in ‘Fior Di Latte’, a feature film that made it to several “Top 10 Must See” Tribeca lists, marks a full-circle moment for Mathur, who left acting years ago due to the lack of nuanced South Asian roles.

In an exclusive interview with New India Abroad, Mathur spoke about navigating the film industry as a second-generation immigrant. “The pressures of finding a more viable career path combined with the stereotypes of South Asian roles at the time contributed to an eventual decision to focus on academics,” he said.

After years behind the camera in writing, business, and media, he returned to acting—and found the landscape more open.
