Satish K. Tripathi, the long-serving president of the University at Buffalo (UB), has announced that he will step down from his role in July 2026, concluding more than 14 years of leadership.
Tripathi, who first joined UB as provost in 2004, reflected on his tenure in a letter to the campus community. “While there is never an ideal time to leave this role, I do so knowing that the state of our university is strong,” he wrote.

Under Tripathi’s leadership, the university has modernized its campuses, expanded its research reach, and enriched both undergraduate and graduate education. He has helped launch seven new academic departments and overseen unprecedented levels of fundraising, with three of the largest-ever single donations to the university made during his presidency.
He signed new academic and research agreements with 31 colleges overseas, bringing the total to 95 across 34 nations. In 2022, Tripathi invited Indian university leaders to UB to sign a research pact in fields like nanotech, biotech, and photonics.
Tripathi highlighted these collective accomplishments in his letter, noting, “Over the past 14-plus years, we have developed a rigorous, relevant and innovative curriculum across disciplines, transforming the undergraduate and graduate experience for a generation of students.”
He also emphasized UB’s impact beyond academia: “Together, we have engaged in the classroom, the studio, the laboratory and the clinic for the purpose of taking our findings and innovations beyond those walls, to regional, national and international frontiers.”
Tripathi expressed pride in UB’s resilience and enduring mission, stating, “Across its nearly 180-year history, UB has faced a number of daunting trials. And yet, as an institution forged in strong principles, we have not only withstood these challenges, we have thrived.”
In 2011, Tripathi became the 15th president of UB and the first president to be born outside the United States. He had previously served as the head of engineering at UC Riverside. As the first Indian-born president of a university in the Association of American Universities, Tripathi also co-leads the AAU task force on U.S.-India campus ties and sits on the boards of the University Innovation Alliance and the College Football Playoff.
Tripathi holds honorary degrees from Brock University in Canada, Maharaja Surajmal Brij University, and IIIT Allahabad. He also received a top alumni award from Banaras Hindu University, where he earned his bachelor’s.
