Indian-born Asmi Kaushal, a mechanical engineering student at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, is using her newly earned title of Miss New Jersey International to promote educational equity for first-generation and immigrant students. She will next represent the state at the Miss International pageant in Kingsport, Tennessee, on Jul. 24 and 25.

Kaushal, 19, who moved to the U.S. from India at the age of six, told Rutgers she sees pageantry as a platform to help students navigate the high school and college admissions process, especially those unfamiliar with the American education system.
