Turtle Walker, a documentary film directed by Taira Malaney has been nominated to the 33rd Raindance Film Festival, an indie film festival held in the UK.
It chronicles the remarkable life of Satish Bhaskar, an Indian biologist who dedicated decades to sea turtle conservation, surveying over 4,000 kilometers of India’s coastline. Produced by Emaho Films, the film blends biographical storytelling with a visual narrative style.
The documentary has won the Grand Teton Award at the Jackson Wild Media Awards, the Jury Award at the Santiago Wild Film Festival, and the Best Film Award at the Academia Film Olomouc International Festival of Science Documentary Films.

In the late 1970s, Satish Bhaskar embarked on a journey along India’s coastlines and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where he uncovered the vital nesting beaches of sea turtles. During his quest, he unraveled mysteries surrounding sea turtles and set out to save them from extinction. After a devastating tsunami struck in 2004, Bhaskar grappled with a pressing question: What happens to sea turtles when their nesting beaches disappear?
Bhaskar undertook his journeys with just a transistor radio, a hammock, and the possibility of seeing a turtle. He measured tracks in the sand, recorded the dimensions of nests and counted the eggs.
Turtle Walker would be competing against other documentaries like Evgeny Afineevsky’s ‘Children in the Fire’ and Maya Amin-Smith’s ‘Emma: One Last Dance’ for the award.
The festival would continue from Jun. 18 to Jun. 27, 2025 and comprises 70 narrative and documentary features at Vue Cinema, Piccadilly, London. The festival will kick off its 33rd edition with the world premiere of Christopher M. Anthony’s boxing drama “Heavyweight,” starring Nicholas Pinnock, Jason Isaacs, and Jordan Bolger.
