Rep. Thanedar urges cabinet to force Trump’s removal

In his letter, Thanedar argued that Trump’s conduct showed he was unfit to discharge the duties of the presidency.

Congressman Shri Thanedar has urged President Donald Trump’s Cabinet to remove the President from office under the 25th Amendment, citing what he called a pattern of dangerous conduct.

In a letter addressed to the 16 members of Trump’s Cabinet, the Michigan Democrat said the president’s recent threat to “wipe out” Iranian civilization, along with a series of other actions, warranted immediate intervention.

“For 15 months, our country has been pushed to its brink,” Thanedar wrote. “The time for action is now, and the American people are desperate for the White House to end its harmful rhetoric and posturing. You must invoke the 25th Amendment against President Trump, declare him unfit to serve, and remove him from office immediately.”

He added, “History will remember the inaction of this administration for not doing enough to prevent Trump from plunging our great country into chaos, but that all can change if you do your part and stop this madness.”

The 25th Amendment allows the vice president and a majority of Cabinet members to declare that a president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office, transferring authority to the vice president as acting president. The provision was most prominently debated after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, when some lawmakers similarly urged Trump’s removal.

In his letter, Thanedar listed several actions he said demonstrated Trump’s unfitness for office. These included what he described as an unauthorized U.S. strike on Iranian facilities in June 2025, Trump’s repeated assertions that Iran’s nuclear infrastructure had been destroyed, and a subsequent escalation with Iran that Thanedar said contradicted the president’s earlier claims.

Thanedar also accused Trump of engaging the United States in conflict with Iran without adequate preparation, including failing to secure the Strait of Hormuz, which he said contributed to a global oil crisis.

The congressman further pointed to Trump’s reported remarks about Iranian civilization and alleged targeting of civilian infrastructure, saying such actions could amount to violations of international law.

He also cited Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs, which he said were later found unconstitutional, along with nationwide immigration enforcement actions and rhetoric targeting members of Congress.

“These are just some examples of the many nonsensical, irrational, and senseless actions President Trump has taken,” Thanedar said in a statement. “There is no rhyme or reason to these actions, which can lead one to only one natural conclusion: these are not the actions of a sane person, nor one who is fit to serve as president of the most powerful nation in the world.”

Thanedar has been among the more vocal Democratic critics of Trump in Congress. In April 2025, he introduced articles of impeachment against the president, accusing him of abusing executive power, violating constitutional limits and undermining democratic institutions.

Similar calls for action against Trump have also come from other Democrats. Indian American Congressman Ro Khanna has pushed for congressional action to rein in the president’s authority over military engagement with Iran, following Trump’s recent remarks.
