Washington: Rakhi Israni, who is running for Congress from California’s 14th Congressional District, said restoring decency and public service to politics is one of the central goals of her campaign.

Arguing that political discourse has become increasingly extreme and performative, Israni said elected officials must remain focused on serving constituents rather than amplifying partisan divisions.

“Irrespective of who is elected, it is essential to remember that the focus of a congressman or congresswoman is to serve the public and the country. Our voters demand decency among the people who they have elected to represent them. That’s when we start to move towards correcting course for the entire country,” said Israni, who is contesting as a Democrat.

Restoring Public Trust in Government

Creating a government that is transparent, accountable, and focused on solving problems is essential to rebuilding public trust, Israni said.

According to her, much of today’s political culture prioritizes performance over governance, which ultimately affects families and communities across the country.

Stating that politics has become increasingly “performative,” Israni said the current environment also impacts younger generations and weakens confidence in democratic institutions.

“It is important to do what is right for our families, for our communities and for our children. We need to bring back conversations around problem solving across the country,” she said.

Israni added that leaders should be willing to call out “bad behavior” regardless of political affiliation.

Governance Reform and Accountability

Reducing complacency in government and prioritizing accountability are among Israni’s major governance reform proposals.

“I feel very strongly that we need to take the complacency out of the system and not have people in the government who are only concerned about keeping their jobs and catering to the loudest in the population,” she said.

Israni argued that voters deserve leaders focused on improving people’s lives, strengthening the economy, and creating opportunities for working families.

According to Israni, governance should center on practical solutions rather than political spectacle.

Listening to Communities and Delivering Results

Pragmatic leadership and active community engagement are necessary for delivering meaningful progress, said Israni who is a lawyer and educator.

A resident of the East Bay area for more than two decades, she said communities benefit most when elected officials prioritize listening and responsiveness.

Israni said her experience working in the legal system, nonprofit leadership, and education sector has shaped her belief that effective policymaking begins with understanding local concerns firsthand.

“Focus on one’s district should be the primary objective and that is exactly what I intend to do if I am elected,” she said.

The special election to replace former Congressman Eric Swalwell is scheduled for August 18, while the Democratic primary is set for June 16. The primary for the permanent seat will be held on June 2.
