Indian-origin historian Priya Satia will deliver a public lecture at the University of California, Berkeley at 5 p.m. on April 27, focusing on historical interpretations of republicanism during the 18th century.

Titled ‘The Eclipsed Republicanism of the Era of Conquest,’ the talk will be held at the IGS Library in Philosophy Hall on the Berkeley campus. The event is part of programming related to the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Satia announced the lecture in a public message addressed to the Berkeley community. “Berkeley folks, I'll be giving a talk relating to the 250th anniversary of the US at UC Berkeley at 5 pm on April 27,” she said. “Do come if you can! In the lecture, Satia is expected to examine alternative forms of republicanism that were present in the 18th century but later overshadowed during the American Revolution and the period of colonial expansion. According to the event description, the erasure of these traditions from public memory has contributed to narratives that frame the idea of freedom as having exclusively European origins.

Satia is the Raymond A. Spruance Professor of International History and a professor of history at Stanford University. Her scholarship focuses on the British Empire, with particular attention to the Middle East and South Asia, and explores how imperialism shaped political, intellectual and material aspects of the modern world.

She is the author of three award-winning books: ‘Time’s Monster: How History Makes History’ (2020), ‘Empire of Guns: The Violent Making of the Industrial Revolution’ (2018), and ‘Spies in Arabia: The Great War and the Cultural Foundations of Britain’s Covert Empire in the Middle East’ (2008).

Her academic and public writing has appeared in publications including American Historical Review, Technology & Culture, Financial Times, Slate and The Nation. She is currently working on a new book, ‘The Lake of Liberation,’ which examines British colonialism in Punjab.

The April 27 event is organized with support from the Institute of European Studies at UC Berkeley. Registration details are available through the event listing.
