As of July 5, at least 27 people, including nine children, were confirmed dead following flash floods in Kerr County, Texas. Rescue operations were ongoing, with dozens of individuals, including over 20 young girls from a summer camp, still reported missing.
The floodwaters rose rapidly along the Guadalupe River after intense rainfall early July 4 morning, submerging large parts of the Texas Hill Country region. More than 800 people were evacuated as the waters began to recede.
Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick stated that up to 500 rescue workers had been deployed, noting the difficulty in accounting for those missing, many of whom had gathered near the riverbanks for Fourth of July celebrations.
U.S. President Donald Trump said the federal government was working closely with state and local authorities in the rescue and relief efforts. “Melania and I are praying for all of the families impacted by this horrible tragedy. Our Brave First Responders are on site doing what they do best,” he posted on social media.
The National Weather Service declared the flash flood emergency had ended in Kerr County but a broader flood watch remained in effect until July 5 evening.
