Scholars Arvind Sharma and Ramesh Rao will be honored by INDICA, a nonprofit organization that promotes Indian Knowledge Traditions, as part of its annual Grateful2Gurus program marking Guru Purnima. The announcement was made by INDICA president Avatans Kumar.
Ramesh Rao will be felicitated at the Abhyudaya Retreat Center in Willowbrook, Illinois, on Sep. 6, 2025. Details regarding the event honoring Arvind Sharma are yet to be finalized.
Guru Purnima, observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Ashadha, falls this year on July 10. It is a significant occasion in Dharmic traditions, dedicated to recognizing the role of spiritual and academic teachers. The Grateful2Gurus program is INDICA’s initiative to acknowledge scholars whose work preserves and disseminates Dharmic knowledge.
Arvind Sharma is currently the Birks Professor of Comparative Religion at McGill University. Born in Varanasi, Sharma pursued studies at Allahabad, Syracuse, and Harvard, transitioning from economics to religious studies. His academic contributions include over fifty books and five hundred articles spanning topics such as Hinduism, ethics, Advaita Vedanta, and religious pluralism. In 2025, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for his contributions to religious scholarship and interfaith understanding.
Ramesh Rao has taught communication in the United States since 1987. Before that, he worked as a banker, teacher, and editor in India. His research and writing have focused on Indian society, politics, and ancient communication theories. Rao has authored several books and written more than a hundred op-eds published in India, the UK, and the US. He is also the editor of India Facts, a platform that promotes discussions around Hinduism and Indian culture.
"INDICA felicitates Dharmic scholars to recognize and publicize their works within the Dharmic communities," said Nishant Limbachia, INDICA’s national coordinator. "It is a sort of Guru Dakshina from the community as appreciation of their scholarly work in support of Dharma."
"At INDICA, honouring Gurus is not merely tradition; it is a heartfelt offering to the Parampara itself," said Ramsundar Lakshaminarayanan, co-national coordinator. "Since 2016, the Grateful2Gurus program has carried this spirit forward, blessing us with the opportunity to honour over 130 Gurus across the globe." Past recipients include David Frawley and Subhash Kak.
