Maryland Governor Wes Moore proclaimed Sept. 20 as Indian American Heritage Day in the state in recognition of the 7th Annual Festival of India at the Howard County Fairgrounds, the state’s largest Indian cultural gathering.
The proclamation recognized the festival’s contribution to Maryland’s social fabric and its significance in fostering cultural understanding and pride. Hosted by the Indian Cultural Association (ICA), the festival has been voted ‘Best Festival in Howard County’ for three consecutive years in the Baltimore Sun’s Best of Howard poll.
The event was attended by elected officials, including Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth, Delegates Feldmark and Natalie Ziegler, Councilwoman Deb Jung, and State’s Attorney Rich Gibson. The Embassy of India was represented by Anand Somani, Minister of Counselor Services, and his wife.

The celebration featured over 500 performers presenting classical, folk, and Bollywood dance, live music, and fashion shows. Performances ranged from Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, and Mohiniyattam to Bhangra, Garba, Lavani, and Bollywood. A highlight was the Dhol-Tasha performance by the Baltimore Marathi Mandal.
Visitors enjoyed authentic regional cuisines, artisan crafts, and interactive activities such as henna, storytelling, and children’s games. A health fair provided screenings, resources, and flu shots, while community organizations offered opportunities for civic engagement.
Niti Srivastava, ICA’s executive director, said, “We’re not just showcasing culture, we’re shaping community. Every dance, every dish, every story is a thread in the fabric of belonging.”
Sanjay Srivastava, ICA president, added, “This festival is more than a celebration; it’s a movement. It’s a space where Indian American identity is celebrated, and where service is powered by empathy and compassion.”
With sponsorship from local institutions and businesses, organizers said planning is already underway for next year’s event, which aims to expand programming and partnerships.
