Vice President JD Vance cast his ballot in Ohio’s primary elections on May 5, backing Republican candidates including Vivek Ramaswamy in the state’s closely watched gubernatorial race.

Vance voted at St. Anthony of Padua Maronite Catholic Church in Cincinnati, accompanied by his son. A video captured by Fox News showed him holding his ballot and joking with reporters, saying, “I have to hide it from the reporters. I don’t want them to know who I voted for.”

He later confirmed his choices in a post on X, writing that he voted for Ramaswamy for governor, along with Jay Edwards for state treasurer and Eric Conroy for Congress.

Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate and biotech entrepreneur, has emerged as the leading Republican contender in the gubernatorial primary and is expected to face Democrat Amy Acton in the general election.

Vance and Ramaswamy have prior ties dating back to their time at Yale Law School, where they were contemporaries.

The Ohio primary is part of a broader set of contests expected to shape the November midterm elections, with voters selecting nominees for governor, U.S. Senate, and congressional races. The gubernatorial contest has drawn national attention as Ohio, once a swing state, has trended Republican in recent cycles.

Vance also indicated support for incumbent Jon Husted in the U.S. Senate race. Husted currently holds the seat vacated by Vance after he was elected vice president in 2024 and is expected to face Democrat Sherrod Brown in November.
