U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal on April 13 criticized U.S. President Donald Trump over a social media post targeting Pope Leo, calling the remarks “deranged and disgusting” and linking them to broader ideological disagreements.
“Universal health care. Peace, not war. Seeing the humanity in all people. That’s what Trump is opposed to, and that’s why Pope Leo is the latest person on his attack list,” Jayapal wrote.

She said the post could affect Trump’s standing among Catholic voters, noting that more than 50 million Americans identify as Catholic.

“The deranged and disgusting post from Trump attacking Pope Leo should certainly help him appeal to the more than 50 million Americans who identify as Catholics,” she added.
Jayapal also used the opportunity to call on Vice President JD Vance, who follows Catholicism, urging him to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office.
Trump’s remarks came after Pope Leo, the first U.S.-born pontiff, criticized U.S. military actions and called for peace amid the ongoing Iran conflict.
The Pope has repeatedly warned against war and urged global leaders to prioritize diplomacy, positions that have put him at odds with the Trump administration.
In response, Trump posted on Truth Social calling the Pope “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy,” escalating a broader confrontation between the White House and the Vatican.
The exchange is part of a growing rift between the U.S. government and the Holy See, fueled by disagreements over foreign policy, immigration, and the use of military force.
