Members of the Sikh Soldiers (martyrs) society atteneded the event / Prithipal Singh
A substantial section of Italians, especially those belonging to families who witnessed the tumultuous times of World Wars and the liberation of their motherland from the clutches of Germans, continue to eulogize all those Sikh soldiers who made supreme sacrifices while fighting the aliens more than 80 years ago.
One such event was held on June 2 by the World Sikh Soldiers (martyrs) Society of Italy in collaboration with the commune of Maradi on June 2. It was the 13th martyrdom day after members of the Sikh community belonging to the Sikh soldiers raised the Sikh symbolic “Khanda Sahib” to commemorate the war of liberation against the invading Germans.

Sikh soldiers fought for Italy to get its territories freed from Germans. Their sacrifices were unique in the sense that they fought for a country which was thousands of miles away from their motherland. The number of Sikh soldiers who made the supreme sacrifices is estimated at 142.
To mark the 14th anniversary of the martyrdom of Sikh soldiers, Sikh settlers from nearby areas gathered in large numbers. Led by Prithipal Singh, president of the World Sikh Soldiers (martyrs) Society, they recited “shabads” from Gurbani before “Ardas” was performed by Bhai Gursewakjit Singh.
Mayor Tomacho Triberti and several other Italian leaders then recalled how the Sikh soldiers fought in trying and hard conditions against the Germans to free the territory.
He said that the Italian community would continue to acknowledge the great contributions made by Sikh soldiers in the liberation of Italian territories from the illegal occupation of the Germans.
Satnam Singh, secretary of the Sikh Soldiers (martyrs) society, while appreciating the large-scale participation of the local community and its leaders, besides representatives of various Sikh societies and institutions and gurdwaras, said that this cordial bond between the two communities would continue forever.
