Indian-origin father charged with attempted murder of toddler

North Carolina authorities allege the 2-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries and that the child's father delayed seeking medical care.

An Indian-origin father was charged with attempted first-degree murder after authorities alleged he inflicted catastrophic injuries on his 2-year-old son and failed to seek prompt medical attention.

According to the Garner Police Department and court documents, 44-year-old Kiran Netha Pasunuri was arrested following an investigation that began after the toddler was taken to a hospital with severe injuries.

Police said investigators worked with medical professionals and the Wake County District Attorney's Office to determine the circumstances surrounding the child's injuries.

Court records allege the child suffered traumatic injuries to the head and back, including a massive brain bleed, retinal hemorrhages and compression fractures to multiple vertebrae. Medical records cited in court documents state that surgeons performed emergency surgery to remove part of the child's skull to relieve pressure on the brain.

Investigators allege that Pasunuri intentionally caused the child's injuries and delayed seeking medical care, causing the toddler to suffer for an extended period before being taken to the hospital.

Pasunuri has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, two counts of felony intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury and two counts of felony negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

The 2-year-old survived the injuries and remains the victim in the ongoing criminal case. Authorities have not publicly released updated information on the child's condition.

Pasunuri is being held at the Wake County Detention Center on a $200,000 secured bond. As a condition of any release, a judge ordered that he have no contact with the child.The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the alleged assault. Pasunuri has been charged, and the allegations against him have not been proven in court.
