Indian-origin correctional officer killed in Canada crash

An Indian-origin officer from Canada's correctional service was killed along with a colleague while carrying out her duty.
Two correctional officers identified as Ramandeep Kaur Maan and Nicolae Serban were killed in a crash while transferring an offender from the Edmonton Institution for Women.

The offender was also killed in the crash at the intersection of Highway 13 and 41, about 270 kilometers southeast of Edmonton near the Alberta-Saskatchewan border on Aug. 6.
RCMP said the minivan carrying the officers and the inmate and a Hino box truck with a lone driver were involved in the crash.
“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of Correctional Officers Nicolae Serban and Ramandeep Kaur Maan of Edmonton Institution for Women, who tragically lost their lives yesterday while carrying out their duties in service to Canada. Their commitment to public safety, professionalism, and dedication to their work exemplified the values of the Correctional Service (CSC) of Canada,” the agency said in a statement.

“Today, our thoughts are with Nick and Ramandeep's families, friends, and colleagues, who are facing an unimaginable loss. We honor them not only as Correctional Officers, but as valued members of our CSC family whose lives, service, and contributions have made a lasting impact on those who knew and worked alongside them,” the statement said.
This tragedy has affected many families and communities, it said.
The agency also mourned the loss of Kiara Mooswa, who was in its care and custody at the time of the accident, and extended its condolences to her family, friends and community.
During this difficult time, we stand united in support of all those affected by this tragic loss, the statement said.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his thoughts were with the loved ones and colleagues of the two officers.
“Every day, correctional officers do difficult work with an enormous responsibility: keeping Canadians and our communities safe. Yesterday, two officers tragically lost their lives,” he wrote on Facebook.
