Indian ragas meet chamber music at New York concert
The musicians played classical ragas, "Vande Mataram" and an East-meets-West improv.

The Consulate General of India in New York partnered with Salon de Virtuosi to host a musical concert on June 3, bringing together Indian and Western classical music traditions on the same stage.
Titled "East Meets West," the concert was organized at the Indian Consulate in New York and stood as an "unforgettable evening where Indian and Western classical traditions meet on one stage," Salon de Virtuosi noted on social media.
Talking about the event, the Consulate said on X, "The evening brought together accomplished musicians and music enthusiasts, showcasing how music transcends borders, cultures, and languages."
It added, "The event underscored the role of music in bringing people together and deepening cultural ties."
During the event, Deputy Consul General Vishal J. Harsh addressed the gathering and highlighted the important role of cultural exchanges in strengthening the India-U.S. partnership.

A celebration of the rich confluence of Indian and Western classical music traditions, "East Meets West" featured Terra String Quartet, Deepsankar Bhattacharjee on sitar and Samir Chatterjee on tabla.
The Terra String Quartet, winners of the 2025 Naumburg Chamber Music Competition and top prizewinners at major international competitions in Bordeaux, Wigmore Hall, Melbourne and Osaka, is a dynamic New York-based ensemble.
The group comprises alumni of The Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, Harvard University and The Curtis Institute of Music, bringing Western classical music to the event.

The other half of the puzzle was formed by Deepsankar Bhattacharjee and Samir Chatterjee.
Bhattacharjee is an Indian sitar virtuoso and torchbearer of the rare Jafferkhani Baaj style, having trained under his father, Pandit Hara Shankar Bhattacharya, and the legendary Padma Bhushan Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan.
Chatterjee is a renowned Indian American tabla virtuoso, composer and teacher who trained under the legendary Pandit Shyamal Bose and has performed internationally with leading artists across Indian classical, jazz and world music traditions.
The group played classical ragas, "Vande Mataram" and an East-meets-West improv.
