The Government of India’s Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the annual Padma Awards list for 2026, with three Indian-Americans among the recipients of the country’s highest civilian honours.

A total of 131 individuals have been selected this year. Of these, five will receive the Padma Vibhushan, 13 the Padma Bhushan, and 113 the Padma Shri.

Dr. Nori Dattatreyudu, a globally recognised radiation oncologist, has been conferred the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award. Born in Mantada village in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district, he earned his medical degree from Kurnool Medical College and completed postgraduate studies at Osmania Medical College. Over his career, he has served as a consultant to the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency and is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, the American College of Radiation Oncology, and the American Society for Radiation Oncology.

Indian tennis icon Vijay Amritraj, who had earlier received the Padma Shri, has also been awarded the Padma Bhushan. Amritraj won 16 singles titles during his playing career and later served as India’s Davis Cup captain, helping elevate the country’s profile in international tennis. After retiring, he became a well-known commentator, including stints with Fox Sports in the United States, and has been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

The Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, has been awarded to Dr. Prateek Sharma for his contributions to medicine. Dr. Sharma is widely recognised for his work in improving the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal diseases and cancers, particularly through advanced imaging and endoscopic treatments.

All awardees will be honoured at a ceremonial function hosted by the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan later this year.
