Indian American teenager Dev Lakhani won first place in the journalism event at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference, held earlier this year at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.
Lakhani, a senior at Jericho High School, topped participants from all 50 states in a 100-question examination testing knowledge of news writing, media ethics, interviewing techniques, and publication management.

"Four years ago I had no idea what FBLA would teach me about storytelling and leadership," Lakhani said. "This win proves that when you stay committed and learn from the right people, you can accomplish things you never imagined."
The national win marked the culmination of Lakhani’s four-year involvement with FBLA. In 2024, he finished seventh nationally in the Intro to Business Presentation category alongside teammates Dylan Rateshwar and Kaylin Kim. At the state level, he achieved five first-place finishes at the New York State Leadership Conference in Business Procedures, Presentation, Public Policy, Website Design, and Journalism, earning seven medals in total.
"We are super proud of Dev and all that he has accomplished," said Michael Goldin, Jericho FBLA advisor.
Lakhani credited advisors Goldin, Nicole Izzo, and Jessica Ruth Rogovitz for fostering a collaborative environment within the Jericho FBLA program, which consistently produces strong state and national competitors. He plans to pursue studies in writing, leadership, and business innovation in college.
FBLA, a nonprofit organization with over 200,000 members, focuses on preparing students for careers in business, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Its National Leadership Conference serves as the flagship event for competitive events evaluated by business leaders and educators.
The conference brought together more than 17,000 students, educators, and exhibitors from across the United States.
