Indian American student Vanya Agrawal is combining astrophysics and music to transform astronomical data into symphonies inspired by space phenomena. Agrawal, a rising junior majoring in astrophysics and minoring in music at Washington University in St. Louis, has been exploring how scientific data can be translated into sound through a process known as sonification.

When she was a high school student in Palos Verdes Estates, California, she collaborated with experts at Palomar Observatory on projects involving novae, which are powerful stellar explosions that momentarily brighten stars. This experience sparked her interest in the topic.
