Indian American Lawmakers denounce attack on Michigan synagogue

The lawmakers highlighted the constitutional protection for religious freedom and the need for rejecting antisemitism.

Indian American lawmakers have expressed shock and anguish over the March 12 attack on a Detroit-area synagogue, highlighting that antisemitism has no place in America.

At a time of rising religious hate amid strenuous geo-political conditions, an individual allegedly crashed his truck into the hallway of a Detroit-area synagogue where children were attending preschool. The suspect was fatally shot in a confrontation with security personnel, reported the authorities.

Congressman Ro Khanna described the attack as "heartbreaking" and emphasized that "the Jewish American community should be able to live and worship in peace."

He added, "Antisemitism and violence have no place in America." Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi also condemned the incident in similar terms.

Rep. Jayapal added, "My heart is with the Jewish community in Michigan affected by this violence. Our places of worship should be safe spaces, and I pray for everyone's safety."

Rep. Krishnamoorthi hailed the first responders for there quick response and noted, "The attack on Temple Israel is a disturbing reminder that we must confront antisemitism and reject all forms of hate wherever they appear."



Congressman Shri Thanedar also thanked the law enforcement agencies and expressed his condemnation against the "act of hate against Jewish Michiganders."

He added, "Freedom of religion is one of the fundamental values our nation was built on, protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution...My thoughts are with the congregation and everyone affected by this attack."
