U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Oct.22 lodged an immigration detainer for an Indian national accused of killing three people in a vehicular crash while driving under the influence in California.

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Jashanpreet Singh illegally entered the United States through the southern border in 2022 and was released into the country under the Biden administration.

ICE filed the detainer following Singh’s arrest by local authorities on multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Singh was driving an 18-wheeler that plowed into several vehicles, causing an eight-vehicle pile-up that left three people dead and four others injured.

Dash-cam footage showed he failed to brake before impact, and toxicology tests confirmed the presence of narcotics in his system. Singh faces charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence.

“It is a terrible tragedy three innocent people lost their lives due to the reckless open border policies that allowed an illegal alien to be released into the U.S. and drive an 18-wheeler on America’s highways,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in a statement. She added that the case “follows a disturbing trend of illegal aliens driving 18-wheelers and semi-trucks on America’s roads.”

DHS said the California case was the second such incident in a week involving an undocumented truck driver, following a fatal collision in Indiana. The agency described the two cases as part of a “pattern of criminal illegal aliens driving commercial vehicles” that pose risks to public safety.

Authorities are investigating whether Singh held a valid commercial driver’s license and how he secured employment as a long-haul trucker.
