Hyderabad student dies in Illinois road accident

Sreeja Varma Lakkars was walking from her apartment to a nearby restaurant when the incident occured

A 23-year-old student from Hyderabad died in a road accident in Champaign, Illinois, on the evening of August 11.

Sreeja Varma Lakkars was walking from her apartment to a nearby restaurant for dinner when she was struck from behind by a speeding truck. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A native of Gandi Maisamma in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, Sreeja had recently completed her master’s degree in the United States and was preparing to begin a professional career in Chicago. Her family hails from Ramarkula in Siddipet district and her younger sister, Shreya, travelled to the U.S. about 20 days ago to pursue higher studies.

The Consulate General of India in Chicago confirmed the accident on X, stating: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Sreeja Varma Lakkars, an Indian student, in a road accident in Champaign, Illinois. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family in this difficult time. The Consulate is extending all possible support and assistance and is in close touch with local authorities.”

Sreeja’s parents, Srinivas Varma and Hemalatha, have appealed to Telugu associations in the United States to assist in repatriating her mortal remains to India for the last rites.
