Consulate General of India in Atlanta confirmed the news stating,, “Four Indian nationals, including two children, lost their lives in a tragic accident in Alabama on Saturday 5th July. Consulate is in touch with the family and extending all possible support.”
According to media reports quoting local authorities, the family’s sedan came into contact with a mini truck before bursting into flames on the highway causing the bodies of the victims to be charred.
The investigation into the cause is ongoing, with highway patrol coordinating with Greene County deputies to determine whether speed, weather, or mechanical failure were contributing factors.
The victims, identified as members of an Indian family from Hyderabad residing temporarily in Dallas, were reportedly visiting family in Atlanta for Fourth of July celebrations. Their journey home tragically ended when the crash occurred on a rural stretch of highway.
While the Alabama State Highway Patrol has not yet released the identities of the deceased, media outlets claim they are Venkat Bejugam, his wife Tejaswini Cholleti and their two children, Siddarth and Mrida Bejugam.
Dental and DNA verification examinations will be carried out for confirmation of identity before handing over the remains for repatriation. Law enforcement officials report that both vehicles’ black boxes and any available surveillance footage are being examined.
