Vishy Ayyar’s ‘American Warrior’ set for Aug 29 release

It follows an MMA fighter’s struggle for redemption, navigating personal loss, cultural challenges, and the fight of his life.

Award-winning hollywood feature film American Warrior is scheduled for release on August 29 in select theaters and nationwide via video-on-demand (VOD) and digital platforms. 

The action drama follows the story of an Indian-American immigrant and amateur mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter who, after serving time in jail, attempts to rebuild his life. The plot centers on an incident in which the protagonist intervenes to stop a convenience store robbery, leading to unexpected public attention and recognition as a local hero.

Subsequently entered into a local MMA tournament, he must confront his past and work toward redemption in and out of the ring. Directed by Gustavo Martin, the film stars Danny Trejo, Vishy Ayyar, Veronica Falcón, Taylor Treadwell, and Omi Vaidya. 

The film had its world premiere at the Santa Fe Film Festival in April 2024, and later made its Asia debut at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) at Goa in November 2024. 

It is partly inspired by actor Vishy Ayyar’s own experiences and personal journey. Ayyar also developed the story for the screenplay, which was written by Martin and Matt Anthony.

The production team includes executive producers Joseph Lanius, Chaitra Vedullapalli, Neal Patel, and Swetha Pakala, with producers Naveen A. Chathapuram, Rashaana Shah, and Cristy Coors Beasley.

The film has been screened at several international film festivals, including the Buenos Aires International Film Festival and the San Antonio Film Festival.
