FIA-NE marks India’s independence at Boston Harbor

A special proclamation was issued declaring August 15th as India Day in the Commonwealth.

The Foundation of Indian Americans – New England (FIA-NE) marked India’s independence on Aug. 10 with a waterfront parade at Boston Harbor that drew participants from more than 20 countries. 

The 4th International India Day Parade, led by Bollywood actor and filmmaker Jugal Hansraj, featured a lineup of themed floats honoring leaders from both U.S. and Indian history, including George Washington and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.  A special float marking the “Iron Man of India” Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 150th birth anniversary was a highlight of the parade.

Subu Kota, chairman of The Boston Group, was the chief guest. Dignitaries, including Monique Tú Nguyen, who represented Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and Indian diplomat Piyush Singh from the Consulate General of India in New York, were also in attendance.

Guests of Honor included Padma Shri recipient S.P. Kothari (former MIT dean), Ram and Meetu Gupta, Sushil and Alka Tuli (chairman, Leader Bank), Balram Singh (community reformer), Rajendra Singh (senior RANA leader), and Neela Gandhi, amongst others. 

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey issued a special proclamation recognizing Aug. 15 as India Day in the Commonwealth, highlighting the contributions of the Indian American community. "The India Day Parade is not just about celebration – it is about honoring the shared struggles, values, and dreams that bind us together as a global family," said Abhishek Singh, president of FIA–New England.

The parade was followed by a cultural program that included performances by Indian classical dance troupes such as the Amudhashri Dance Group, led by Kalaimangai Anbalagan, Dhol Tasha ensembles and international groups such as the Nirankari Samaj.

During the program, FIA-NE recognized over 200 seniors for community service, awarded scholarships to local students  in partnership with the Sudhir Parikha Foundation, and felicitated veterans and women leaders with citations from the governor’s office.

The celebration also featured a roundtable themed “United World, Shared Dream: Peace, Prosperity, and Progress” where attendees discussed shared democratic values for a peaceful global community.
