The parents of slain University of Texas student Savitha Shan said their daughter’s sudden death has left an “irreplaceable void,” calling the loss unreal and deeply unfair in a statement issued March 3.
Shan, whom her parents describe as a “bright, compassionate and deeply caring young woman,” was one of two victims who were fatally shot on the morning of Mar. 1 in Austin in an attack that also injured 14 others. The assailant, identified as an immigrant from Senegal, was wearing a T-shirt with the Iranian flag and a shirt with “Property of Allah” written on it, officials said.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Acting Special Agent Alex Doran said there were signs that the 53-year-old shooter, Ndiaga Diagne, had a “nexus to terrorism,” which investigators were following up on.
Shan, a student at the University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business, believed in working hard, serving others and living with integrity, according to her parents.
Shan’s parents also extended their prayers to those injured in the attack and to their families, hoping for a speedy recovery. They also expressed gratitude to the first responders, medical teams, UT Austin administrators, community leaders, friends and loved ones who worked to help the victims and showed Shan’s parents compassion and support during this devastating time.
The family noted that Shan’s funeral services will be held privately for close family and friends as a celebration of her life.
