The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago and the INDO-US Lions Club hosted a Diwali celebration at City Hall on Oct. 8, 2025, in collaboration with Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas. The event, attended by community members, local officials, and international guests, marked the Festival of Lights with traditional prayers, performances, and messages of peace.

The celebration began at 3:30 p.m. with an address by Treasurer Maria Pappas, who welcomed attendees and shared greetings for the occasion. “Diwali greetings to all of you,” she said. “Let this light of Diwali shine — today and always.” Her remarks emphasized the need for unity and optimism during challenging times.

FIA President Anu Malhotra described Diwali as more than a festival of lights, calling it a “celebration that brings communities, hearts, and people together with gratitude and joy.” She led a short prayer and explained the symbolism of diyas, or clay lamps, saying, “The light in your hand represents the light within you, and the flower represents your heart — pure and ready to spread love.”

The program also featured remarks from the Consul General of Ukraine in Chicago, who said, “Thank you for having me here. Let the good win over the tough times.” Representing India, Deputy Consul General K.D. Thokchom conveyed greetings, adding, “Namaste and good afternoon. Wishing everyone a very Happy Diwali.”

FIA Chairman Sunil Shah reflected on the festival’s message of hope and renewal. “When we come together with light in our hearts and purpose in our actions, no darkness can prevail,” he said. Hina Trivedi of the INDO-US Lions Club thanked Treasurer Pappas and her team “for welcoming us and working tirelessly for months to make this possible.”

The event included a classical dance performance by Madhura Sane of Nritya Natya Academy, followed by proclamations and awards recognizing community service and cultural leadership. Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias issued a proclamation honoring FIA Chicago for its role in promoting cultural diversity.

As the ceremony concluded, attendees received Diwali prasad and refreshments.
