In a historic move for the Hindu community in California, Governor Gavin Newsom has officially signed AB 268 into law on Oct.6, adding Diwali to the state’s list of recognized holidays.

The bill, introduced by Assembly Members Ash Kalra and Dr. Darshana Patel, received overwhelming support in the state legislature last month. It allows community colleges and public schools to close in observance of Diwali, giving Hindu children the opportunity to celebrate the festival and participate in its traditional rituals without academic conflicts.

The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), which played a key role in mobilizing broad community support for the bill, announced the news on social media and thanked the governor for his assent. "CoHNA is proud to have supported and brought broad Hindu support to this important bill through our grassroots advocacy efforts," the organization said.

The law reflects growing acknowledgment of California’s diverse cultural and religious communities and marks a significant step toward inclusive education policies that respect the religious observances of students from all backgrounds.

For Hindu families, the recognition of Diwali as a state holiday ensures that children can fully participate in the time-honored rituals and celebrations that mark one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar.

With AB 268 now signed into law, California joins a growing number of states recognizing Diwali, signaling a broader acceptance and celebration of Indian-American cultural heritage across the United States.
