India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission was honored with the 2026 Goddard Astronautics Award by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics during a ceremony held in Washington, D.C., on May 21, recognizing the mission’s achievements in lunar exploration.

The award was presented to the Indian Space Research Organisation at the AIAA ASCEND 2026 Conference for Chandrayaan-3’s successful soft landing near the Moon’s south pole on Aug. 23, 2023 – the first mission in the world to achieve such a landing in the region.

According to the award citation, the mission was recognized “for the groundbreaking landing of the ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 near the lunar south pole region, to deepen our understanding of the moon and beyond.”

The Moon’s south polar region is considered scientifically significant because of the possibility of water ice deposits and other resources that could support future long-duration human missions.

Chandrayaan-3 gathered data from the lunar south polar region and confirmed the presence of key chemical elements in the soil, findings expected to support future human missions and possible in-situ resource utilization on the Moon.

India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, accepted the award on behalf of ISRO during the conference.

“Congratulations to @isro and Chandrayaan 3 team on winning the prestigious 2026 Goddard Astronautics Award from The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics @aiaa,” Kwatra said in a post on X.

“Honoured to accept the award on behalf of ISRO and to highlight Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s Space Vision 2047 and the upcoming deep space exploration and human spaceflight missions, and growing commercial space ecosystem in India,” he added.

In his remarks at the conference, Kwatra highlighted India’s plans for deep space exploration, human spaceflight, and the expansion of the country’s commercial space sector. He also called for stronger collaboration between India and the United States across governments, industries, and research institutions in advancing space exploration initiatives.

The Goddard Astronautics Award is regarded as AIAA’s highest honor for notable achievements in astronautics. Previous recipients have included figures associated with major NASA programs and commercial space initiatives, including Jeff Bezos for Blue Origin.
