Atharva Vyas / DHS
The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued an ICE detainer against 24-year-old Indian man, Atharva Vyas, after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a mother-daughter duo in a San Antonio park, ICE notified on April 25.
San Antonia police charged Vyas with aggravated assault and accused him of repeatedly punching Gabriella Perez, 27, while also grabbing her hair. He also allegedly attacked Perez’s young daughter, and it is reported the child suffered bite wounds to the face.
The incident occurred on April 18 at around 3 PM after Vyas emerged from the woods near Espada Park and started attacking the victims.

When officers arrived in the 1700 block of Southeast Military Drive, Vyas was being restrained by a bystander who saw what happened.
Vyas is believed to be a stranger to the victims, and there is no word on what led to the attack. Vyas was allegedly under the influence of 'wax', a highly concentrated cannabis product, at the time of the incident, as per the New York Post.
Vyas entered the United States on a student Visa in 2023 after he was admitted to the University of Texas. Within months of entering the country, Vyas was arrested at the University of Texas campus on charges of felony assault.
The ICE was contacted by the University administration but Vyas' visa was not revoked under the consideration that the charges were not “egregious” enough to warrant visa revocation.
As per the detainer issued on April 18, Vyas will be detained and subject to subsequent ICE proceedings after his criminal trial and potential punishment is concluded.
Talking about the incident, Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement, “This criminal illegal alien brutally bit this child and caused her to lose two teeth. This barbaric assault against this woman and her three-year-old in a park was completely preventable.”
Bis continued, "The Biden administration NEVER should have released this animal following his arrest for assault. We are working with our partners in Texas to ensure this criminal illegal alien never roams free in American communities again."
