An Indian-origin blitzkrieg just shook Australian cricket

Is the next big Australian cricketing sensation an Indian-origin batter? Twenty-year-old Harjas Singh has put himself firmly on the radar of Australian cricket with a record-shattering innings that has drawn attention across the sport.
The Sydney-born batter, whose parents migrated from Chandigarh in 2000, scored 314 runs off 141 balls for Western Suburbs against Sydney Cricket Club at Pattern Park. His knock featured 35 sixes, making it the highest limited-overs score in Australian first-grade premier cricket.
For context:
- The highest individual score in official ODIs is 264 by former India captain Rohit Sharma.
- Only 12 batters have scored double centuries in ODIs.
- Among them, Glen Maxwell is the only Australian.
- Rohit Sharma has achieved the feat three times, while Sachin Tendulkar and Shubman Gill have also scored double hundreds.
Singh’s 314 places him third on the all-time list in New South Wales Premier first-grade history, behind Victor Trumper’s 335 (1903) and Phil Jaques’ 321 (2007)—both scored in longer formats.
Harjas had already gained attention earlier in the year during the 2024 U-19 World Cup final in South Africa. He top-scored for Australia with 55 off 64 balls against India, helping his team post a total of 253.
The media quoted him as saying it was “the cleanest ball-striking I've ever done, for sure”.
The performance has strengthened his case for higher honours, with selectors now viewing him as a serious long-term prospect in limited-overs cricket.
