Dr. Rachana Kulkarni recognized as NJBIZ physician of the year

NJBIZ, New Jersey's leading business journal, has awarded Dr. Rachana Kulkarni as Physician of the Year. The award recognizes her exemplary leadership in cardiovascular medicine, longstanding commitment to women’s heart health, and advocacy for health equity.

Dr. Kulkarni currently serves as Regional Director of Cardiovascular Services for RWJBarnabas Health and Director of the RWJBarnabas Health Women’s Heart Center. She is also the President and CEO of Medicor Cardiology, one of New Jersey’s premier cardiology practices.

With a career spanning over two decades, she is renowned for both her clinical work and her advocacy for gender equity in healthcare. She has played a pivotal role in increasing awareness of heart disease in women and in educating both the public and medical professionals on gender-specific risks and treatments.

She is also leading the RWJBarnabas Health Women’s Health Collaborative and aiding women's cardiovascular health needs.

Nationally, Dr. Kulkarni has been a strong proponent for pay equity and greater inclusion of women in the field of cardiology, working to create a more supportive and sustainable professional environment for female physicians.

As Director of Community Cardiology and Preventive Health at RWJBarnabas Health, she has led multiple initiatives to promote heart-healthy communities. Her advocacy played a key role in passing New Jersey state legislation to enhance cardiovascular health education and physical activity in schools.

She currently chairs the Board of Directors for AAPI New Jersey, representing physicians of Indian origin.

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Kulkarni serves as Vice Chair of Akshaya Patra USA, the world’s largest NGO-run mid-day meal program, feeding over 2.2 million children daily. Her leadership has significantly expanded the U.S. chapter’s reach and impact, demonstrating the strength of public-private partnerships in driving social change.

Dr. Kulkarni has also won the Physician of the Year award by American Heart Association, the Women of Impact Award by American Heart Association and the Inspirational Physician Award by American Medical Association.
