A donation drive has been launched to support 21-year-old Bandna Bhatti, an Indian American UC Berkeley student who suffered a devastating fall on Apr.19 that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Just three weeks shy of graduating with a degree in Data Science, Bandna now faces a life-altering recovery journey, prompting her family and friends to rally for support.
The drive started on Apr. 26 has raised $98,077 as of May 5, and the family continues to gather funds for her extensive medical care, rehabilitation, and adaptive needs.
On the night of the accident, Bandna sustained multiple critical injuries, including a spinal fracture, tearing of the dura with spinal fluid leakage, a scapular fracture, and a brain hematoma. She remains hospitalized and is undergoing treatment. Doctors say her injuries will require long-term physical therapy, specialized support, and significant home modifications.
Her friends and family describe her as a “brilliant, compassionate, and resilient young woman who has worked tirelessly toward her dreams.” Now, they say, Bandna needs her community more than ever.
To kick off the fundraiser, Bandna’s closest friends ran a half-marathon in her honor on May 4.
“Our goal is a $5-per-mile pledge to raise vital funds for Bandna’s recovery. Whether you’re able to sponsor a mile, donate what you can, or help spread the word, your support will make a powerful difference,” the organizers said.
