Democratic lawmakers on Jan. 14 called for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, with Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan publicly backing the effort, citing what he described as misconduct by the department and its leadership.
Rep. Robin Kelly of Illinois formally introduced articles of impeachment against Noem on Jan. 14, following the fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis last week. Kelly said she filed three articles alleging obstruction of Congress, violation of public trust and self-dealing, and said the effort has the support of 70 members of Congress.

Speaking at a press conference, Kelly accused Noem of fostering aggressive federal enforcement actions across multiple cities. “Secretary Noem has brought her reign of terror to the Chicagoland area, LA, New Orleans, Charlotte, Durham and communities east, north, to south to east to west,” Kelly said. “She needs to be held accountable for her actions.”
I refuse to stay silent while Secretary Noem breaks the rule of law and terrorizes our communities. I am introducing Articles of Impeachment against her for violating the public trust, obstructing Congress, and self-dealing. Read my full statement: https://t.co/aVZNuICqsm

The impeachment push follows national outrage over the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, who was killed while sitting in her car on a residential street during an ICE operation. The Trump administration has described the incident as an act of “domestic terrorism” by a “professional agitator,” a characterization disputed by video evidence and local officials. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the shooting reckless and demanded federal agents leave the city, a request the administration rejected while sending additional personnel.
Thanedar, a Democrat who serves as ranking member of a Homeland Security subcommittee, said he fully supports impeachment. “Secretary Kristi Noem has lied to Congress and to the American people,” he said. “Under her leadership, ICE agents have wreaked havoc on communities across this country. She has disgraced our democracy.”
Thanedar cited multiple concerns, including shootings involving DHS agents, deaths in ICE detention centers in 2025, and what he described as the department’s use of qualified immunity to shield agents from accountability. He also accused Noem of denying lawmakers access to immigration facilities and blocking congressional oversight.
“At a Homeland Security hearing in December, I called out Noem for lying to me in a Congressional hearing, and demanded she resign,” Thanedar said. “Secretary Noem’s actions go beyond incompetence. She has broken the law. I fully support the impeachment of Kristi Noem.”
