The College of Architecture, Art and Construction (CAAC) at Clemson University appointed Vivek Sharma, an Indian-origin academic, as its new associate dean of student excellence following a competitive internal search.

In the new role, Sharma, associate professor in the Nieri Department of Construction and Real Estate Development, will be responsible for curriculum and student-affairs initiatives across the college’s undergraduate and graduate programs.

“Dr. Sharma rose to the top of a competitive internal search,” said Dean Ece Erdogmus of CAAC. “He has proven to be a leader among our faculty, both as a teacher and researcher. He embodies our college’s identity as a place where cutting-edge research, such as AI-based approaches, and high-impact experiential student activities, such as participation in national competitions, drive the No. 1 student experience.”

At Clemson, Sharma has been involved in several student-centered initiatives. He coached the university’s team in the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Annual Construction Science and Management Competition, leading them to three national championships within five years.

As a doctoral advisor, he guided doctoral student Stuti Garg, who received the Chishiki Artificial Intelligence in Civil Engineering Graduate Fellowship from The University of Texas at Austin.

“Student achievement lies at the heart of my leadership,” Sharma said. “By cultivating transformative yet measurable experiential learning opportunities such as undergraduate research, competitions, study abroad programs, and community service, we are empowering every CAAC student to engage deeply, think boldly, and graduate ready to thrive in a changing world, strengthening the lifelong value of a CAAC degree.”

Prior to joining Clemson, Sharma held teaching and research positions at Texas State University, where he served as a senior lecturer and account manager for the National Healthcare Facilities Benchmarking Program funded by the Construction Industry Institute.

He also worked as a faculty associate at Arizona State University’s Del E. Webb School of Construction. His professional experience includes roles as project manager and engineer at Kitchell Construction Company in Phoenix and as an assistant architect at Raja Aederi Consultants in New Delhi.

Dean Erdogmus said Sharma’s experience in the design-build approach and his work across academia and industry would support the college’s efforts to strengthen its applied programs. “I look forward to the ways in which his leadership will help us ensure that our students are prepared to lead lives of significance,” she said.

Sharma holds a doctorate in Civil Engineering (Construction Engineering and Project Management) from The University of Texas at Austin, a master’s degree in Construction Engineering from Arizona State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the National Institute of Technology, Raipur, India.
