Five non-students allegedly attacked a Sikh student and removed his turban at San Jose State University on Feb. 7, prompting a campus investigation and a town hall meeting by Sikh student leaders.
President of the university’s Sikh Collegiate Federation, Hasmeet Kaur, said that she saw a video of the attack, captured by another student, and pointed out that the attackers even misidentified the victim.

As the attackers appeared to believe the victim was actually Hindu, the leader of the San Jose Hindu temple said they had alerted their own community about the incident.
San Jose State issued a statement, confirming the attack, and wrote,
“Hate crimes are evil acts that harm entire communities and have no place in our community.”
Kaur also mentioned that she was shocked and in disbelief that such an incident took place at San Jose State University, especially with respect to its diversity.
While the video she referenced has not been made public yet, Kaur said that everyone needs to be aware of this incident and it cannot be repeated, asking for changes, including cultural sensitivity training, and possible ‘Sikh Awareness’ on the campus as well as campuses all over the state.
For the town hall meeting held on Feb. 12, the student group planned on compiling its demands for change to present to the university.
