The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) has named Indian-American virologist and academician Siddappa Byrareddy as its 20th Scientist Laureate, the highest recognition awarded to researchers at the institution.

Byrareddy, the Singer professor of microbial pathogenesis and vice chair for research in the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience, joined UNMC in 2016 and has since built a reputation as one of the university’s most prolific investigators.

He leads the Byrareddy Laboratory, which focuses on combating some of the world’s most formidable viral threats, including HIV, COVID-19, Zika, and Mpox. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he authored several highly cited papers and reviews on SARS-CoV-2, cementing his role as a leading voice in global virology research.

“Byrareddy is one of the most prolific investigators we have on campus. His ability to identify a problem, conduct a study and write it up for publication is second to none. This was especially apparent during the pandemic, when he authored multiple highly cited papers and review articles on SARS-CoV-2,” Ken Bayles, vice chancellor for research at UNMC told University press.

In accepting the award, Byrareddy dedicated the honor to his research teams, collaborators, mentors, and the supportive UNMC community. “I thank federal, state funding agencies and philanthropic supporters for empowering bold, new directions in our research and the people of Nebraska and the United States, whose generosity and tax dollars make long-term scientific progress possible,” he said to University press.

Byrareddy will be formally recognized at a ceremony on November 6, alongside other UNMC faculty who received Distinguished Scientist, New Investigator, and Research Leadership Awards.
