India sends aid, Pakistan urges talks as UN confronts Afghan crisis

UN experts said that the Taliban remain torn “between pragmatism and ideology,” but increasingly pursue the latter, tightening restrictions on women and girls.

India on Sept. 17 pledged emergency relief and long-term support for Afghans at the United Nations, declaring its commitment “non-negotiable,” while Pakistan pressed for sustained dialogue with the Taliban, warning that isolation “serves no one’s interest” as the Security Council weighed how to address Afghanistan’s mounting crises.

During a special Security Council meeting convened to address Afghanistan’s deepening humanitarian and political crisis, Western nations called for pressure and accountability.
