Ethiopian Airlines has announced the launch of direct flights between Addis Ababa and Port Louis, Mauritius, creating a new travel link that could benefit Indian travellers across Europe and Africa.
The airline will begin operating the route on July 12, 2026, with flights running three times a week on a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. Through its hub in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Airlines will connect Mauritius with destinations across India, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and other European markets.

The new service comes as Mauritius continues to attract visitors from India, a country with which it shares deep historical, cultural, and familial ties. Nearly 70 percent of Mauritius' population traces its ancestry to Indian indentured labourers who arrived on the island during the nineteenth century, making India one of Mauritius' closest partners and a major source of tourism, business, and cultural exchange.
For people living in Europe, the new route could provide an additional travel option to Mauritius through Africa's largest airline network. Ethiopian Airlines already serves multiple Indian cities and dozens of destinations across Europe, allowing travellers to connect through Addis Ababa before continuing to Port Louis.
The airline said the route is designed to strengthen connectivity between Africa, Europe, India, and the Indian Ocean region. The service also arrives at a time when airlines are exploring alternative routing options amid changing global travel patterns and operational challenges affecting traditional transit corridors.
Mauritius remains a popular destination for Indian tourists, honeymooners, business travellers, and families. Strong cultural links, visa-friendly policies, luxury tourism offerings, and regular government-to-government engagement have contributed to growing travel demand between the two countries.
The new service may also benefit members of the Mauritian diaspora with Indian roots who travel frequently between Mauritius, India, and European countries. By adding another connection point through Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Airlines is expanding travel choices for passengers who have traditionally relied on Gulf hubs or direct services from select markets.
Industry observers note that the route reflects the growing role of African carriers in connecting global diaspora communities. Over the past decade, Ethiopian Airlines has expanded its network across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, positioning Addis Ababa as a major international transit hub.
The direct Addis Ababa- Port Louis flights are expected to enhance tourism, strengthen business ties, and improve accessibility between Mauritius and several regions with large Indian-origin populations.
