Artificial intelligence is reshaping weather prediction in India, giving millions of farmers new tools to cope with climate uncertainty.
This year, an AI-based model co-developed by UC Berkeley’s William Boos accurately predicted a stalled monsoon, allowing smallholder farmers to adjust planting and avoid losses.

For the first time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare delivered forecasts with up to four weeks’ advance notice of continuous rains, reaching 38 million farmers across 13 states through text messages. The state of Odisha also used voice messages to extend the service to another one million farmers.
