Tripti C. Kataria / Illinois State Medical Society
Chicago-based anesthesiologist Tripti C. Kataria was elected president of the Illinois State Medical Society for the 2026–27 term, becoming the first woman of color to lead the organization.
Kataria was elected during the organization’s recent annual meeting and will serve through April 2027.

An anesthesiologist practicing across the Chicagoland area, Kataria currently serves as manager of physician advisory solutions, level of care and chart audits at R1 RCM, where she leads the chart audit service line and physician advisor program.
Her work includes Medicare compliance consultation, medical necessity reviews, treatment authorization reviews, insurance appeals and physician training for health systems nationwide.
She also serves as a part-time attending anesthesiologist with Professional Anesthesia Consultants.
Kataria has held leadership positions within the American Medical Association for more than a decade, including serving as chair of the Council on Legislation since 2018 and as vice-chair of the Anesthesiology Section Council and delegate.
The Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists congratulated Kataria on her election, saying it was “proud to see an anesthesiologist leading the state’s medical society in the coming term.” Dr. Kataria previously served as president of the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists from 2020 to 2021.
Earlier in her career, Kataria served as medical director of anesthesiology at Holy Cross Hospital within Sinai Health System and as an assistant professor at the University of Chicago Medical Center. She also directed the University of Chicago’s anesthesia billing and practice management seminar focused on billing, coding and compliance issues in anesthesiology practice.
Kataria earned her medical degree through the combined B.A./M.D. program at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Medicine. She completed her anesthesiology residency at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, followed by cardiothoracic anesthesiology training at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
She also holds a Master of Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and an M.B.A. with honors from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.
