Penn State Engineering Alumni Society honors four Indian-origin faculty

They were honored on June 12 for outstanding contributions to engineering research and teaching.

The Penn State Engineering Alumni Society (PSEAS)has recognized four Indian-origin faculty members for their contributions to research and teaching.

The recipients included Dipanjan Pan, and Abhronil Sengupta, who received the Outstanding Research Award. Swaroop Ghosh was honored with the Premier Research Award, while Saptarshi Das received the Premier Teaching Award.

Pan, the Huck Chair Professor and Professor of Nuclear Engineering at Penn State was awarded the Outstanding Research Award. He earned a master's degree in chemistry from Vidyasagar University, a Ph.D. in chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, and completed postdoctoral research in chemistry, polymer science and nanotechnology at Washington University in St. Louis. 

Sengupta, an associate professor in Penn State's School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, also received the Outstanding Research Award. He earned a bachelor's degree in electronics and telecommunication engineering from Jadavpur University and a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Purdue University. 

The award recognizes engineering researchers for advancing the frontiers of knowledge through their research accomplishments.

Ghosh, professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, received the Premier Research Award, which honors individuals whose contributions to scientific knowledge through research are considered exemplary and have earned international recognition. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, a master's degree from the University of Cincinnati and a Ph.D. from Purdue University. 

Saptarshi Das, Ackley Professor of Engineering Science in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics, was honored with the Premier Teaching Award. The award recognizes faculty members whose contributions to engineering education and teaching are of exceptional quality.He earned a bachelor's degree in electronics and telecommunication engineering from Jadavpur University and a Ph.D. in nanoelectronics from Purdue University. 

“The recipients of the PSEAS awards exemplify what it means to pursue excellence and accelerate impact in all aspects of their work,” Eric Donnell, senior associate dean of the College of Engineering, said in a statement.

The Penn State Engineering Alumni Society has recognized outstanding achievements in engineering for more than five decades through its annual awards program. The awards honor faculty, staff and alumni across several categories, including teaching, research, advising and service.
