Indian-American attorney and civic advocate Neeloy Azad has launched Curbside Critics, a new Instagram interview series featuring conversations with Houston residents about their experiences of living in the city.

The series is part of the Desi Democracy Project, a civic engagement initiative focused on South Asian communities in Texas, which Azad launched.

The program aims to provide a platform for residents to discuss everyday issues affecting life in Houston through informal, street-style interviews filmed in neighborhoods across the city.

Three episodes have been released so far, featuring guests including local DJ Obsrv and Houston resident Audrey Nath. Rather than scripted discussions, the episodes capture candid conversations on issues ranging from transportation and housing to neighborhood planning and access to public spaces.

Topics explored in the series include commuting challenges, traffic conditions, sidewalk and bicycle infrastructure, housing affordability, and the availability of parks and recreational areas. Participants also share their views on how urban planning and neighborhood design influence their daily lives.

"I wanted to create a space where everyday Houstonians could talk openly about what it's actually like to live here," Azad said. "These conversations have covered a lot of ground, from housing to how neighborhoods are designed and connected."

Apart from the media initiative, Azad continues his legal advocacy work. According to a press statement, he recently assisted in preparing a federal habeas corpus petition on behalf of an asylum seeker currently in the custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The petition is pending before a federal court in Texas.

The Desi Democracy Project promotes civic education and community engagement among South Asian communities in Texas. Through legal advocacy, outreach programs, and public initiatives such as Curbside Critics, the initiative seeks to encourage greater civic participation while providing a platform for residents to share their perspectives on issues affecting their communities.
