Balakrishnan, who has been serving as associate dean for research in CAAD, will oversee the college’s academic, research, and operational responsibilities during this transition. University officials emphasized that the move ensures continuity of leadership while advancing several key initiatives within academic affairs.

In announcing the appointment, university leaders expressed confidence in Balakrishnan’s collaborative approach and ability to guide CAAD forward. “Balakrishnan will be an effective, collaborative leader in this interim role,” the University said in a statement.

Balakrishnan, a professor in the School of Architecture, is recognized for his research at the intersection of design, 3D visualization, and human-computer interaction. His projects have earned support from federal agencies and industry partners.

Before joining Mississippi State, he chaired the Department of Architectural Studies at the University of Missouri from 2018 to 2021, where he had served as faculty since 2008.

Originally from India, Balakrishnan earned his bachelor of architecture from the University of Kerala before beginning his career as a licensed architect, contributing to multiple award-winning projects. He later pursued graduate studies in the United States, earning both a master of science in architecture and a doctorate in mass communications from Penn State University.
