Sheth has authored or edited more than 80 books and nearly 300 scholarly papers, book chapters, and journal articles. According to Emory, his research has been cited more than 75,000 times. In 2025, he was included in the Stanford University and Elsevier database of the World's Top 2 Percent Scientists.

In 2020, the Government of India awarded Sheth the Padma Bhushan, the country's third-highest civilian honor, for his contributions to literature and education.

At Emory, Sheth received the Thomas Jefferson Award, the Marion Creekmore Award for Internationalization, and the Distinguished Faculty Lecture Award. Reflecting on his tenure, Sheth said the growth of Goizueta Business School stood out most.

"Looking back over 35 years at Goizueta, what has meant most to me is the world-class reputation and growth of the business school," Sheth told the University press. "It also meant a lot to meet colleagues across the campus from different disciplines; getting to know and work with them on various projects and committees."

Outside the classroom, Sheth and his wife, Madhu Sheth, established the Sheth Family Foundation, the Madhuri and Jagdish Sheth Foundation, and the Sheth Education Foundation.

Through these organizations, they have supported educational, healthcare, sustainability, and cultural initiatives in the United States and India. At Emory, the family's philanthropy includes the Sheth Fellowship for doctoral students and the Sheth Distinguished International Alumni Award.

Born in Burma (now Myanmar) in 1938, Sheth moved to India with his family in 1941 and completed much of his schooling in Madras (now Chennai). He earned an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh in 1962 and a PhD from the university's Katz Graduate School of Business in 1966.

He is the author or co-author of more than 80 books, including The Accidental Scholar, Chindia Rising, The Rule of Three, and India's Road to Transformation: Why Leadership Matters, published in 2024.
