Indian American professor elected secretary of global medical editors group

Khubchandani was chosen from a pool of more than 1,500 member editors, and his term will run through 2027.

Indian American public health professor Jagdish Khubchandani has been elected secretary of the World Association of Medical Editors, a global body representing editors from more than 50 countries.

The organization, founded in 1995, focuses on improving the quality, transparency and credibility of medical scholarship worldwide. Khubchandani was chosen from a pool of more than 1,500 member editors, and his term will run through 2027.

A WAME member for more than a decade, he previously served on its board of directors. As secretary, he will coordinate leadership meetings, manage governance functions and oversee the association’s official correspondence.

“It is my honor to serve an organization like WAME that has a very firm commitment to strengthening editorial standards, promoting integrity in medical publishing, and fostering international collaboration,” he said.

Khubchandani, who joined New Mexico State University in 2020, has co-authored more than 200 original articles in leading medical and public health journals and has held editorial roles across several peer-reviewed publications. 

He has been a professor at New Mexico State University since 2020, following a decade on the faculty at Ball State University. He earlier worked in research and teaching roles at the University of Toledo and Western Kentucky University.

He holds a doctorate in public health education and promotion from the University of Toledo, a master’s in public health from Western Kentucky University, and an MBBS from M.G.M. Medical College in Indore.

WAME president Chris Zielinski said Khubchandani’s extensive research and editorial experience will support the group’s efforts to enhance global publishing standards. 

Khubchandani said the organization’s priorities include strengthening editorial standards, promoting ethical research and publication practices, and providing training resources for medical editors worldwide.
