Google honored Indian-origin computer scientist Arpit Gupta for his pioneering research in developing low-cost network foundation models that could make advanced Artificial intelligence systems more affordable and accessible.

Gupta, an assistant professor of computer science, received the Google Research Scholar Award and the inaugural Google Machine Learning and Systems Junior Faculty Award. The recognition places him among a select group of early-career faculty advancing work at the interface of machine learning and systems.

“The award is going to more than 50 assistant professors in 27 U.S. universities whose research is particularly noteworthy for Google,” said Amin Vahdat, vice president and general manager of ML, Systems & Cloud AI. “These professors are leading the analysis, design, and implementation of efficient, scalable, secure and trustworthy computing systems.”

Gupta’s work challenges the traditional use of task-specific models in networking by pursuing what he calls the “convergence principle” — a unified, general-purpose foundation model capable of handling diverse networking problems. Drawing inspiration from natural language processing breakthroughs such as BERT and GPT-3, his research seeks to create self-driving networks that can manage themselves with minimal human intervention.

Addressing unique challenges of networking — including scale, efficiency, and dynamic environments — Gupta’s group is developing selective representation approaches to process vast amounts of network data without prohibitive computational costs.

His efforts are already being tested in collaboration with ESnet, a national research network, and have attracted attention from industry leaders including Cisco.

At UC Santa Barbara, Gupta co-directs the Systems and Networking Lab, focusing on advancing digital equity and affordable “Internet for All.” His broader contributions span networking, security, cryptography, and data-driven policymaking, and have earned him honors including the NSF CAREER Award, the Internet-2 Innovation Award, and the ACM SOSR Best Paper Award.

Gupta holds a doctorate and master of arts in computer science from Princeton University, an MS from North Carolina State University, and a bachelors of technology in electrical and computer engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.
