Common Sense Media, a San Francisco based non-profit, has announced the appointment of former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to its Board of Directors.
Dr. Vivek Murthy served as the 19th and 21st Surgeon General of the United States, serving from 2015 to 2017 and 2021 to 2025. He will be collaborating with Common Sense Media, a platform dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families, in the interdisciplinary crossroads of technology and health.
Common Sense Media is noted for providing trustworthy information, education, and an independent voice. Its ratings, research, and resources reach more than 150 million users worldwide and over 1.4 million educators and more than 100K schools worldwide every year.
Over his two terms as Surgeon General, Dr. Murthy has driven impactful initiatives that have influenced both national and global health discussions. His efforts have prompted reforms in business and non-profit sectors.
He has also spotlighted vital yet often overlooked health challenges, such as the loneliness epidemic, parental mental health and well-being, the youth mental health crisis, and burnout among healthcare workers.

While serving as U.S. Surgeon General, he had issued an advisory on the effects of social media on youth mental health, in 2023. The following year, he called for warning labels on addictive social media platforms.These are issues that are at the core of Common Sense Media's efforts.
