Asst. Professor Priya Deshpande named Kern Engineering Unleashed Fellow

Dr. Deshpande, an alumna of the University of Pune, was recognized for revamping Marquette University's database design course.

Dr. Priya Deshpande, an assistant professor at Wisconsin's Opus College of Engineering, has been named a 2025 Engineering Unleashed Fellow by the Kern Family Foundation (KFF).

Dr. Deshpande, an electrical and computer engineering professor at Marquette University Opus College of Engineering, was recognized for revamping the undergraduate database design course at the university. Her innovative approach uses gamified modules, real-world case studies, and stakeholder-driven capstone projects to foster entrepreneurial learning, equipping students to solve real-world problems and create societal impact.

The award was granted to 29 faculties from 23 institutions nationwide, honoring educators who show exceptional leadership in enhancing undergraduate engineering education and embody the entrepreneurial mindset promoted by the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN).

As part of the fellowship, Deshpande will receive a $10,000 grant to advance her project, along with national recognition.

The honor will also attract opportunities to collaborate with a network of Fellows nationwide. Her work is expected to directly impact undergraduate students at Marquette and extend its reach to peer institutions through publications, workshops and the Engineering Unleashed online platform.

A senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Dr. Deshpande holds a PhD from Chicago's DePaul University and a masters in Information Technology from the University of Pune, India.
