Menka Soni, after being elected as the first Indian American on the Redmond City Council in Washington state, took the oath holding the Bhagavad Gita, highlighting not just her roots but also the values that she seeks to uphold while in office.

Her milestone contributes to an expanding roster of Indian-origin figures in U.S. public service who have opted for the Bhagavad Gita during their swearing-in rituals. In February, Indian-origin Kash Patel took his oath on the Bhagavad Gita upon becoming the ninth director of the FBI. Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, the inaugural Indian-American representative from the U.S. East Coast, similarly swore his oath on the Gita in January.

Soni talked about the significance of the step and said on LinkedIn, "As a reminder of my roots, heritage, and the values that guide me, I took my oath holding the Shri Bhagwat Geeta (One of our sacred Indian scriptures) in my hand."

She added, "It was a powerful moment of connection to where I come from and the principles of truth, duty, and service that I strive to uphold in public life."

Highlighting the blueprint of her tenure, she added that she was committed to strengthening community engagement, advocating for equitable housing and livability, supporting small businesses and economic vitality, and enhancing safety, sustainability, and long-term planning.
